Screenshots Show Alleged Racist Group Chat Among Jacksonville NC EMS Staff
Emergency medical personnel in Onslow County are facing scrutiny after screenshots of a private group chat allegedly show racist and homophobic conversations among staff members.
The Messages
The screenshots, submitted anonymously to The North Carolina Beat, appear to show a group chat labeled "Work GC" with participants identified as Onslow County EMS employees.
Messages include references to "pure gene pools," racial slurs embedded in street addresses, and derogatory language about the Black Lives Matter movement and LGBTQ individuals.
The participants are identified as Rebecca Davis (Paramedic Captain), Kyle Wenner (paramedic), and Joshua Mullin (EMT-Basic).
The Conversations
One exchange appears to discuss "muddying the gene pool" with participants clarifying whether this refers to incest or interracial relationships. Messages express disgust and end with "#puregenepool."
Another screenshot shows someone using a homophobic slur in reference to former Onslow County Manager David Smitherman, who was terminated earlier this year under controversial circumstances.
Social Media Posts
The submission included social media posts attributed to Kyle Wenner from 2016 responding to the Dallas police protest attack. The post contains offensive language targeting the Black Lives Matter movement.
Previous Complaints Allegedly Ignored
According to the anonymous submission, concerns about the messages were raised with department leadership and human resources. Officials allegedly claimed "no knowledge" of the allegations when initially reported.
The submission also claims an employee who allegedly assaulted a Black teenager faced only minimal discipline.
Why This Matters
Emergency responders are trusted to provide impartial care during life-threatening situations. These allegations raise questions about whether bias could affect the quality of care provided to minority residents.
